Duluth area driver takes win at CBIR

BRAINERD, MN – Mark Strohm (pronounced STROHM) of rural Duluth (Saginaw Post Office) took first in class during the Sports Car Club of America Improved Touring race on Saturday (May 20) at Colonel’s Brainerd International Raceway, near Brainerd. Strohm drove his Toyota Corolla to first in the ITB category, and third overall in the race for Improved Touring cars.

Strohm qualified in the pole position in the ITB category for Sunday’s IT race at CBIR, and came within a half second of the ITB record on the 3-mile road course. He held the lead in the ITB category when his engine lost power on the third lap. The problem was later traced to a bent pushrod in the usually reliable Toyota engine.

Jason Goldfine of Duluth drove an ITB Plymouth Fire Arrow to 7th place in Saturday’s race, but was a non-finisher on Sunday.

Strohm and Goldfine are part of the Duluth Area Motorsports Network - Improved Touring (DAMN-IT), a group of several racers from the Duluth area who compete in the SCCA’s Improved Touring category.
